Today I am humbled...

I haven't added to this blog, so here is my first crack at it. I guess this is as good a place as any to maybe say some things that I don't share much, or perhaps share some thinking that may have some importance or weight.

Today, I was humbled to see the rough-and-tumble town that is Gillette, Wyoming give honor to one of this great country's fallen soldiers. Sadly, he was a hometown kid. And I don't say "kid" to make light of anything. 19. That's still a kid, no matter how you view it.

Lance Corporal Jacob Ross is someone that I have never met. I may have passed him in the grocery store, or sat behind him in a restaurant. Shoot, knowing me I probably made some comment about his driving if we were in the same vicinity on the road. I couldn't tell you anything about his family, where his street was or if he could breakdance. But, I have been touched by this young man. I don't know what it is exactly, the boy staring back from a picture in his Dress Deltas with the thousand yard stare that many a Marine have had to master from the moment they hit the turf in boot camp.

Perhaps it's because I'm a new father and I have a greater sense of the world around my daughter. Perhaps it is the sharing of a sense of camaraderie that comes from serving in the United State Armed Forces. I know what type of sacrifices I had to make while serving overseas in the military, and I know how hard it was for my family and friends to deal with me being gone. I served in a time of peace, and the sacrifices then were tremendously straining. I can only imagine that a family that has a loved one in a hot-zone must feel the weight that Atlas carried times a thousand.

A firefight in Afghanistan claimed this young man, far too soon, and far too far away from the comforts that we enjoy. I watched literally thousands of people from this little energy town gather along the streets to honor their fallen warrior...and I was humbled.

This young man that I have never met, who always dreamed of being a Marine, gave the ultimate sacrifice so that my young daughter, her mother, and her father can go to bed tonight and enjoy the same comforts tomorrow that we went to bed with.

He defended my right to go to church and worship without border. He defended my right to disagree with my president. He defended my right to go to work tomorrow for a fare wage and provide a better life for my family. He defended the right for the people that I may disagree with to have their opinions, and the right for them to have an equal voice. He defended our rights to have a fair trial by a jury of our peers. He defended the strong, and protected the weak. All of this from a 19 year old man, whom I never met, and he never asked me for anything in return.

I cried as the hearse carrying his casket passed in front of my family. You're absolutely right I did. Not because I was sad. Not because it was emotional that a young man was gone. Not because my heart breaks for his family that loved him unconditionally. All of those things are true, absolutely. Nope, I cried because I was thankful. I was thankful that any one of the men and women that are out serving today, or have served in the past know the bigger picture. I know that any one my fellow service men and women would make the same sacrifice tomorrow if they knew that even one person would lose their freedoms if they didn't. And Jacob Ross made that sacrifice, whether he knew me or not.

Make no mistakes friends, the history of our country is written in the blood of heroes. This is the Land of the Free, BECAUSE of our brave. If you read this, please take a minute and say a prayer for the families of all of those fighting. Say a prayer for Jacob Ross' family. Say a prayer for the leadership of our country. And when you get done praying all of that...thank God, because our armed forces have fought and died so that you could pray freely in the first place.

"May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn His face toward you, and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-27

Dog GoneIt!

Today I am going to complain. Baila is a very sensitive little dog. She has little dog complex to the tenth degree and is proud of it. Although she is a snob, I have always been able to kennel her at the vet and take her to the vet without any problems. Well, two weeks ago the dogs were looking pretty bad with their shedding and needed a nail trim, so I took them to the groomer. I left them for about two hours and then went and picked them up. When I got there they told me they had a hard time with Baila, and I kinda figured they would. Well, I don't know what they did to her because when I took her to the vet to leave her over night for her teeth cleaning she first nipped at the vet tech, which she has never done, and then when I went to get her today I had to go into the back to get her. They couldn't get her out of the kennel and treated her like a crazy dog, which she is not. I have never had this problem until the groomer!!! I am so mad! I will never be able to kennel her now if we go out of town and every vet trip is now going to be a nightmare. My poor dear little dog has been tramatized. The end of the rant.

A First!

Today was a day of several firsts. First, Samantha sleep for 7 hours straight last night. I slept for 4 because I got up like 7 times to check on her. Second first, she took a bath and did not scream at all!! Third first, she grabbed a toy that she had been batting at all week. It was a one finger hook, but I will take it. Don't know if she knew she had the toy, but again, we will count it. What a wonderful day!

Easter Egg Hunt

Today Anadarko had its company Easter Egg Hunt. I was so excited. I put on a special outfit for Samantha and off we went. It was FREEZING!!! We stayed long enough to get a picture with the Easter bunny and we left and warmed up at a coffee shop. This is the picture you get when it is way too cold to have an infant outside, but darn it, we were getting a picture with that bunny!

Daddy Verses the Camera

I had to laugh at this video because Will was trying to take a picture not realizing that it was set on video.

MoJo verses Donald Duck

This is an Easter present from our Aunt Karen. When she sends us things like this we like to terrorize MoJo. Unfortunately, it seems like he is getting use to noises with the little one around so that it is not as funny. He does still hide behind Mommy when he is scared. I do have to say this duck is a demonic duck. I picked it up by the beak and it yelled, "Put me down!" Dang Demonic Duck. Thank goodness for off buttons.

Never Mind

After looking online at several ellipticals, I finally dove in and bought one. I hate making major purchases. I get so nervous. I'm excited to get it and get it set up. Katie's wedding is getting closer (July), and I need to move my butte. I will probably get rid of the treadmill, so if anyone needs a treadmill let me know. I don't see myself being able to run distance again. Very sad. But, excited about my new exercise equipment :)

Need Suggestions

Hey all, I'm looking for a good, affordable elliptical. Any suggestions? I have decided to give up the dream of going back to running for now. Maybe when I lose weight and get some fitness back I will be able to run, but for now my knees hurt and lock up when I try to run and then later I have problems walking up and down the stairs. I have been to PT for my knees and I know I could do some rehab, but the rehab was very painful before. So, I'm going to my alternative. The elliptical. If you have one or know of a good brand I would really appreciate it.

A Great Question

Our neighbor is taking care of the dogs and fish this weekend. I think he is in 5th grade. He came over last night and I showed him where everything was. He was so good and asked me lots of questions about the dogs and their kennels and many what ifs so he would know exactly what to do. Then he asked me this..."If Lou the fish gets sick should I call the vet?" He was died serious. It took everything I had not to giggle. I had to think for a second what to say. I said, "Well, Lou is a very healthy fish and I don't think you have to worry about that, but in case something does happen to Lou, don't worry about it because there isn't much you can do for a fish. But, again, he is a very healthy fish." I didn't know what to say!!!! He is a great neighbor!

Random Wonderfulness

These are pictures that I took because Samantha was looking so darn cute. The pacifier with her name on it was a gift we received this week from Jane Zent, and I love it. I told Will it could not be used outside of the house because I don't want to lose it. And the awesome headbands are from Ash. I love'em!!!!

A day of nothing

Today has been a great day. I have done nothing but laundry. Samantha had a rough day yesterday so today I decided to make it about Samantha and make sure she was comfortable so she could get some rest. Her first nap was successful in her crib, and then we played. I let her take her next nap in the swing because she gets her best rest sitting up, and I was able to workout and shower and eat lunch. The next nap was with Mom on the couch. We were so cozy that we over slept and ate late. Now, we are playing on the floor while I type this blog. She is such a happy and smiley baby. Today was so great. Will is at Walmart and when he gets home we will have dinner. What a day!

Two Months!

Today we had our two month appointment. Its amazing how much Samantha has grown and changed. She makes noises all the time by either grunting or cooing. She has started to squeal with delight when playing in her pack and play. And, more than once has scared Mo and I with her happy shrieks. Mo helps by going and checking on her. She has rolled from her tummy to her back three times in the past week and can hold herself up with her arms while on her tummy. She loves to sit up and see things, and likes when she can stand on your knees. She has real fun when she can push off. In one of my books she fits under the description of a challenging baby under the subtitle, active baby, oh boy. She is really starting to show a lot of personality.

Naps are getting better. She still fusses and cries a lot before her naps but she is napping and the naps are getting longer and better. We got a crib wedge so that her mattress is inclined to help her reflux and sleeping positioners to keep her still. Well, they doen't really keep her still. That child is all over the crib. Yesterday morning Will asked me if I layed Sam horizontal in her crib. I was tired so instead of saying no, I said, "Why would I do that?" And, he replied will thats how she is laying. Therefore, I am constantly checking on her when she sleeps to make sure she is safe.

Other than the naps, she is a blast. Funny story. We had her on the pink stuff (antibiotic for her ears) and we didn't realize she was storing the pink stuff in her check and not swallowing it. Well, Will hates that stuff. I guess he was on it all the time when he was baby. He bent down to kiss her and she razzed him and sprayed that pink stuff all over his face and in his mouth. I laughed so hard.

Today we went to the doctor. She had gas for some reason and screamed the whole time so when she got her shots no one could tell the difference. She is growing and looking great. She is very strong and the doctor couldn't hear the heart murmur, which is good. Although, it might have been because of all the screaming. Anyway, Samantha is 10 lb 1 oz and I think 21 1/2 inches long. I can't find her sticker that says it. We will go back for a check up and more shots May 3rd.

My dad came this weekend and it was so fun. That little girl was held all the time between Papa holding her and it being the weekend with her Dad home. Speaking of, I have the kindest husband. He made pancakes for breakfast on Saturday and let me take a nap! He said thats going to be his new thing, and I said, "Amen."

What else, oh Samantha has learned to reach up and grab objects. I know this because Sunday she reached up and grabbed my big gold hoop earring. That was fun. And, last night I heard clicking noises and it was Samantha making them with her tongue. I cracked up. Anyway, I think that is all the news for now. Tomorrow I will try to take pictures in her chair for 2 months to see how much she has grown.
